Prioritizing Your Mental & Physical Well-Being in a Busy Season

Updated: Oct 9

Let’s be real—motherhood is an incredible journey, but it can also be exhausting. Between juggling kids, work, and everything in between, it’s easy to feel like your mental and physical health gets pushed to the bottom of the priority list. I’ve been there too. But here’s something I’ve learned: taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. As moms, we give so much of ourselves to our families, our careers, and our communities. But how can we pour into others if we’re running on empty?

The good news? You don’t need hours at the gym or a week at a spa to feel like yourself again. You just need a few realistic strategies to prioritize your well-being in the midst of your busy life. Let’s dive into some simple, practical ways to nourish both your body and mind—without adding stress to your already packed schedule.

1. Micro-Moments of Rest

We often think of rest as something we only get when we have a big chunk of time (which, as a busy mom, can feel non-existent). But rest doesn’t have to be long and drawn out. Try finding small moments throughout your day to pause and recharge.

  • Start your day with a deep breath and prayer: Before the day fully starts, take a moment for yourself. Say a quick prayer, express gratitude, and take a deep breath. It might be brief, but it can set a peaceful tone for your day.

  • Take a two-minute mental break: When the day feels overwhelming, pause for just two minutes. Close your eyes, focus on your breathing, or step outside for a breath of fresh air. These mini-breaks can help clear your mind and reduce stress.

2. Gentle Movement That Fits Into Your Day

Not everyone has time for a full workout at the gym, and that’s okay! But incorporating gentle movement into your daily routine can make a huge difference in how you feel physically and mentally.

  • Walk while you work: Whether you’re pushing a stroller, walking around the block during a break, or pacing while on a phone call, try to get your body moving whenever possible.

  • Stretch during downtime: If you’re sitting for long periods (hello, carpool line!), try a few simple stretches. It’s amazing how much better you’ll feel just by moving your muscles and increasing blood flow.

3. Nourish Your Body With Simple, Healthy Choices

We all know that eating well is important, but sometimes the thought of planning out meals or cooking from scratch every day can feel overwhelming. Don’t overcomplicate it—focus on small, healthy choices that are easy to incorporate.

  • Keep healthy snacks on hand: Stock up on simple, nourishing snacks like fruit, nuts, or yogurt so you have something quick to grab when hunger hits. It’s all about setting yourself up for success!

  • Hydrate throughout the day: I can’t stress this enough—water is your best friend. Carry a water bottle with you and aim to drink throughout the day. Hydration boosts energy and mental clarity, which are both essentials when you’re running around!

4. Mental Health Check-Ins

Your mental health matters just as much as your physical health. It’s easy to get caught up in the chaos of life and push aside how we’re really feeling. Try checking in with yourself regularly to stay in tune with your mental well-being.

  • Journaling for five minutes a day: Take a few minutes to write down your thoughts, worries, or things you’re grateful for. This simple practice can help declutter your mind and refocus your energy.

  • Talk it out: Whether it’s with your spouse, a friend, or a professional, don’t be afraid to talk about how you’re feeling. Sometimes just saying it out loud can help alleviate stress and give you a fresh perspective.

5. Spiritual Wellness: Feeding Your Soul

Spiritual well-being is an essential part of the overall balance. God invites us to come to Him when we are weary, and He provides rest and peace for our souls.

  • Quick devotionals on the go: Download a Bible app and read a verse or two when you have a moment of quiet. Even in the car or waiting in line, you can stay connected to God’s word.

  • Meditative prayer: Take a few minutes each day to engage in quiet, meditative prayer. Let God’s presence refresh your spirit and ease your mind from the worries of the day.

A Little Goes a Long Way

I know it can be tempting to put your own well-being on the back burner, but remember, taking care of yourself allows you to better care for those around you. It doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing approach—even the smallest changes can have a big impact over time.

You are blessed in the busy, and by taking steps to prioritize your mental and physical health, you’ll find more energy, peace, and strength to pour into your family and everything else God has called you to do. Start small, give yourself grace, and trust that every effort you make toward wellness matters.

In grace and wellness,

Just reading this brought me peace.

Add to the beginning, during those years, an alcoholic, narcissistic, mean husband & that’s a wrap ‼️
